Paxton questions Cornyn's record in latest Texas US Senate runoff ad

Attorney General Ken Paxton is keeping up his attacks on his Republican U.S. Senate primary runoff opponent with only two weeks to go before the election.

Paxton is currently locked in a tight and contentious primary battle with incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-TX. The two will face off in the May 26 runoff election, where the winner will advance to the November General Election to face state Rep. James Talarico, D-Austin.

In a new statewide television ad, Paxton is asking Texas voters one question: what has Cornyn done for you?

“For over a year, I’ve been asking Texans what John Cornyn has done for them, yet no one has an answer to that question,” Paxton said in a news release. “That’s pathetic.”

In a familiar move, Paxton’s ad seeks to draw a line between Cornyn and President Donald Trump, who called him “weak” and “ineffective,” while simultaneously painting himself as Trump’s preferred pick despite the president refusing to weigh in on the race.

“President Trump is right: John Cornyn is ‘weak, ineffective, and very bad for the Republican Party,’” Paxton said. “Texans deserve better than someone who’s spent decades cutting deals with Democrats on amnesty and gun control. Texans deserve better than John Cornyn.”

The ad leans in on Paxton’s own record of suing former President Joe Biden’s administration more than 100 times and defending Trump at every turn.

“I’ve spent my career fighting the establishment while Cornyn has spent his career becoming part of it,” Paxton said. “It’s time for a change in Washington.”
