A former Michigan State longtime assistant coach and player has reportedly landed on another Big Ten staff.
Matt Fortuna of The Inside Zone reported on Tuesday morning that former Spartans assistant coach Dwayne Stephens has been hired as an assistant coach at Penn State. Stephens most recently was the head coach at Western Michigan for the last four seasons but was let go at the end of the season.
Stephens played at Michigan State from 1989 to 1993, and then later on became one of Tom Izzo’s most tenured assistant coaches. He spent 19 years as an assistant coach with the Spartans, and now will be heading to another Big Ten school to continue his coaching career.
Penn State was one of the worst teams in the Big Ten this past season, finishing the season with an overall record of 12-20 and 3-17 in Big Ten play. Stephens will now help Penn State head coach Mike Rhoades attempt to get the Nittany Lions to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2023 and only second time in the last 15 years.
