Limedyke Fire south of Highway 299 in Trinity County contained

Firefighters in Trinity County fully contained the Limedyke Fire, burning in rugged mountain terrain in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest since Thursday, May 7.

The U.S. Forest Service announced early Monday, May 11 that the fire was 100% contained, up from 70% on Sunday morning. The wildfire scorched a total of 4 acres approximately 15 miles south of Highway 299, roughly 20 miles west of Hayfork and 5 miles south of the rural town of Hyampon.

“Containment lines are holding” and firefighters will continue monitoring the fire in “mop-up operations,” the forest service said.

The fire is still smoking from burning stump holes and smoldering timber, so forest visitors, residents and motorists driving on Highway 299 may see smoke.

The fire spread through dry timber, brush and snags after it started last Thursday in the wilderness near the Trinity River’s south fork between the Limedyke Mountain lookout and McClellan Place, said Tom Stokesberry, spokesperson for the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.

Firefighters “aggressively” battled the blaze on Friday and over the weekend, said forest service spokesperson Bob Doucette, while investigators determine the cause of the fire.

Hikers and other people recreating in the forest should avoid the burn area. Anyone visiting the forest should be sure to put out their campfire and never leave a campfire unattended, the forest service cautioned. Motorists should make sure they don’t drag chains or otherwise cause sparks that can ignite vegetation along roads.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection assisted the forest service with fire suppression, the forest service said.
