No one in Florida high school history has thrown a javelin farther than Brison Sullivan.
The New Smyrna Beach senior clinched a state championship and set a new FHSAA record with a 65.21-meter missile during the Class 3A track and field meet on May 8 at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville. That’s 213 feet and 11 inches.
And it wasn’t close between him and anyone else.
The 7.42-meter gap between Sullivan and runner-up Aleksandr Jurado of Belen Jesuit Prep was larger than the separation between second and 12th place.
Sullivan’s gold medal and the resulting 10 points made the Barracuda boys the highest-placing program from the Volusia-Flagler area in Class 3A. They tied for 18th.
Mainland also tallied two points to tie for 50th. Junior Michael London took seventh in the discus event with a throw of 49.47 meters.
On the girls side, Matanzas led the local contingent with a 29th-place finish (seven points).
Peyton Cerasi contributed two top-eight finishes. The sophomore sped to fourth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:55.78 and added a seventh-place finish in the 3,200 (11:03.41).
New Smyrna Beach tied for 50th with the help of Molly Brock. The sophomore cleared 3.15 meters in the pole vault to tie Ponte Vedra’s Hollis Keebaugh for seventh.
Niceville captured the boys championship, and Dillard took home the girls crown.
Class 2A
Mekhi Yan made a successful trip to Jacksonville on May 7.
As the only local competitor at the Class 2A state meet, the Atlantic senior placed second in the high jump. He cleared 2.02 meters.
As a result, Atlantic tied for 32nd.
