Mason girls golf team wins fifth straight state title

Mason girls golf’s Ainsley Burns capped her final high school golf tournament with her fourth Class 2A individual championship, while helping the team defend its state title on Tuesday.

An Angelo State signee, Burns overcame a four-shot deficit with a final round of 66 to overtake first-day leader Alice Baird of Bogota Rivercrest. Cisco’s Jakelee Wood finished second, four strokes behind Burns, while Baird finished third.

The Cowgirls finished with a 306 total on the second day, which was a 35-shot improvement from their opening round. They started the day with a one-shot lead over second-place Spearman and ended with a remarkable 55-shot victory to claim their fifth consecutive state title.

Mason’s Ruby Hills tied for sixth with a 162, followed by Bronwyn Wood’s 164, Anna Marie Whitworth’s 179 and Sophia Jordan’s 186 total.

Spearman held on for a second-place finish, while Sonora won a playoff against Cisco for third place.

Sonora was paced by a 12th-place finish from Brailyn Galindo’s 172, Madison Galindo’s 178, Lynden Cearley’s 181, Gentri Trainer’s 182 and Sofia Garcia’s 218 total.

Mason’s No. 2 team had an unprecedented fifth-place finish at the state tournament, led by Grace Klaerner, who finished with a total of 180. Sabina Perez was the next highest finisher with 181, followed by Caitlin McCrea’s 194, Cameron Asbill’s 203 and Kydie Kimbriel’s 221.

Colorado City’s Kaylynn Epperson was the only other area golfer at the 2A tournament and finished in sixth at 162.

Garden City nearly claims fourth-straight Class 1A title

Garden City nearly claimed its fourth-straight championship but finished as runners-up to Utopia in the Class 1A state tournament.

Garden City shot a 383 on the second day, which was a 32-stroke improvement from their first-round score. However, the Lady Buffaloes held off Garden City with a 381 to claim the title by a margin of 12 shots.

The Lady Kats’ Keegan Batla led the way with a 179 total for a fourth-place finish. She was followed by Joslyn Halfman’s 198, Gracie Raney’s 208, Helen Marshall’s 213 and Karly Baker’s 225.

Veribest finished fourth at the state tournament, led by a sixth-place performance from Kayden Broadway, who shot 187. She was followed by Stormie Luna’s 203, Bailey Erwin’s 218 and Chloe Day’s 236.

Robert Lee’s Kylen Pitcock was the only other area competitor at the Class 1A tournament and she finished 38th overall with a score of 223.
