Down goes Anderson! Artist paints mural of infamous Jose Ramirez fight

A Major League Baseball moment that lives in infamy has now been recreated as a mural.

Artist OKPANTS (@okpants on Instagram) recreated the viral baseball fight between Cleveland Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez and former Chicago White Sox infielder Tim Anderson into a mural at Easy Out, a sports bar in Lakewood, Ohio.

The artwork reimagines the on-field melee between J-Ram and Anderson that began with Ramirez sliding safely into second base on a double down the line. Ramirez took exception to Anderson standing over him after applying a late tag, pushing Anderson’s leg and exchanging words with the former All-Star shortstop.

Ramirez rose to his feet and pointed a finger in Anderson’s face before Anderson dropped his fielding glove and squared up to fight the Guardians legend. Wild haymakers ensued before Ramirez caught Anderson on the chin, knocking him out cold and onto his back.

The viral moment created the now iconic “Down goes Anderson!” broadcast call by Guardians radio play-by-play announcer Tom Hamilton.

OKPANTS, whose real name is Aaron Sechrist, said the Easy Out bar wanted to capture iconic moments in Cleveland sports history.

“One that’s very cool, especially in the realm of baseball … is the iconic brawl between Jose Ramirez and Tim Anderson,” Sechrist said. He said he wanted to “give it some neon, give it some day glow” to morph the fight into a work of art.

Now fans can take pictures in front of the mural, complete with baseball stadium seating.
