MHSAA football playoffs shifting to regional seeding model for 2026

The seeding for the Michigan High School Athletic Association football playoffs will be done in a different way starting in 2026.

Seeding the 11-player playoffs based on a regional model was approved by the MHSAA’s representative council during its spring meeting. This change was based on a recommendation by the MHSAA football committee.

The change means the playoff field will be first organized into eight team regionals. The eight teams in each regional will be seeded based on playoff-point average with seeds No. 1, 4, 5 and 8 making up one district and seeds No. 2, 3, 6 and 7 forming the other district in the region. The winners of each district would meet in the regional final in the third week of the playoffs.

Teams have been seeded by districts in the past for the playoffs.
