Stockton police shoot man allegedly armed with an ax

A man was shot and killed by Stockton police after he allegedly armed himself with an ax and threatened officers.

Officers responded around 7 a.m. Monday to the 2000 block of Nevada Street on a report of a suspicious person armed with an ax. Officer Omer Edhah, a Stockton police spokesperson, said officers learned the suspect was smashing through the front door of a home, but when they arrived, the man had left.

Through follow-up investigations, officers developed information that the suspect, who was in his 20s, was in the 1200 of Deep Cliff Way.

When officers approached the man in the driveway of a home, he picked up an ax and refused to put it down. Officers gave commands to the man to drop the ax “numerous” times, Edhah said.

According to police, the man raised the ax toward officers, resulting in an officer-involved shooting.

Medical aid was provided to the suspect until paramedics arrived and took him to a hospital.

The man died from his injuries at the hospital, police said. His name has not been released by police.

During a news conference, Edhah said the suspect did have an “association” with a residence at the second location he was found.

Police said the area will remain closed during the duration of the investigation. Residents are advised to stay out of the area.

The incident is under investigation by the Stockton Police Department, the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigations, the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office and the California Department of Justice.
