Mickey Andrews broke femur protecting great-granddaughter in fall

Mickey Andrews put protection ahead of pain, cradling his great‑granddaughter as he fell at his Tallahassee home.

The longtime Florida State defensive coordinator broke his right femur and injured his elbow when he fell April 21. He underwent surgery to repair the fracture, spent eight days in the hospital and was then transferred to Encompass Rehabilitation Center.

Andrews, who is turning 84 later this month, was holding his 8½‑month‑old great‑granddaughter on his back porch when he fell, managing to protect her as they went down.

“He was taking her to the swing when he tripped,” said his daughter, Shannon Andrews Stallworth. “He cradled her and fell on his side. He fractured his right femur and needed stitches in his elbow. That sweet baby didn’t have a scratch or a bump on her.”

Stallworth said Andrews is undergoing physical and occupational therapy twice a day and is expected to be released later this week.

“He’s working hard and has received wonderful care,” she said. “He truly appreciates all the thoughts and prayers.”
