Vote for the Globe-News Athlete of the Week for April 27-May 2, presented by Happy State Bank

The softball and baseball playoffs are in full swings and dozens of athletes punched tickets to the UIL State track meet last week, combining to create a stellar group of finalists for the Happy State Bank High School Athlete of the Week.

The Globe-News is taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the Happy State Bank High School Athlete of the Week each week.

Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will close on Thursday and the winners will be announced thereafter.

Nominations are due by 5 p.m. each Saturday and can be submitted through email at sports@amarillo.com.

Please include statistics from the week’s games and any pertinent information or honors.

Take a look at this week’s candidates and cast your vote.

This week’s finalists

• David Abeyta, Tulia baseball — Abeyta hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to help the Hornets rally to sweep Dimmitt with a 7-5 win in Game 2 of a bi-district series. He was 2 for 4 with a double, a home run and four RBIs in the win.

• Major Brown, Wellington boys track — Brown won the triple jump and finished third in the long jump at the Region I-2A track meet.

• Jacob Erickson, Perryton boys track — Erickson double qualified for the UIL State meet by winning the 3,200-meter run and finishing second in the 1,600 at the Region I-4A track meet.

• Chandler Graham, Tascosa girls track — Graham ran the 300 hurdles in 43.49 seconds to finish second at the Region I-5A meet and advance to the UIL State meet.

• Gracee Henderson, McLean girls track — Henderson won the 400 and 800 at the Region I-1A meet to qualify for the UIL State meet in both events.

• Jaylen Kaps, West Plains softball — Kaps struck out 21 batters in a sweep of Ysleta in the area round of the playoffs.

• Presli Pool, Canyon girls track — The freshman finished scond in the 1,600 (4:57.51) and won the 3,200 (10:46.23) at the Region I-4A meet to advance to the UIL State meet.

• Fletcher Schacher, Nazareth baseball — The Swifts’ center fielder drove in four going 2 for 3 in a 12-0 win against Borden County in the bi-district playoffs.
