Ex-49ers GM Trent Baalke lands new NFL job

Trent Baalke is back in the NFL after a year away from the league. The Cleveland Browns reportedly hired Baalke as a consultant, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, a year after he was fired from his general manager role with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Baalke was the Jaguars’ general manager in some capacity from 2020 to 2024. Before that, he spent 17 years with the San Francisco 49ers, including six as the team’s general manager from 2011 to 2016. While he won Executive of the Year in 2011, Baalke’s 49ers didn’t see a lot of success after letting head coach John Harbaugh go following the 2015 season.

The 49ers fired Baalke after the 2016 season when the team hired John Lynch as the new GM and Kyle Shanahan has the head coach.

Baalke worked for the NFL as a football operations consultant from 2017 to 2020 before being hired as the Jaguars’ director of player personnel. He took over as interim GM late in 2020 after the firing of David Caldwell.
