The New York Giants selected Tennessee cornerback Colton Hood in the second round of the 2026 NFL draft last weekend.
Hood is a talented defensive back with excellent size and speed. Listed at 6-foot, 195 pounds, he could quickly emerge as a contender for the Giants’ No. 2 cornerback role during training camp this summer.
The former Tennessee star has worked extensively with future Hall of Famer Patrick Peterson throughout his high school and college careers.
“My uncle (Roderick Hood) played 10 years in the league, and he trained Patrick Peterson when he was with the Arizona Cardinals,” Hood said when asked about his influences. “So, yeah, Pat P is a big one, someone I looked up to since I was 13, 14 years old. Someone I always watched.”
Hood’s playing style clearly reflects that mentorship. A 13-year NFL veteran and eight-time Pro Bowler, Peterson helped Hood develop into an immediate standout with the Volunteers.
In his lone season with Tennessee in 2025, Hood recorded 50 total tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and one interception. The rising cornerback will face his first true test in the NFL at rookie minicamp next weekend, with his work alongside Peterson expected to be on full display from May 8-10.
Hood has the potential to develop into a star in New York and should immediately provide much-needed depth at cornerback for the Giants’ defense in 2026.
