Smokey Bones shutters last Illinois location amid nationwide closures

Springfield is set to lose its last Smokey Bones, the last Illinois location of the barbecue restaurant, as the chain shutters locations across the country.

Known for its authentic fire-grilled and house-smoked meats, the chain closed various locations April 28, including its restaurant in Springfield.

Here’s what we know about the closure.

Which Illinois location closed?

The Smokey Bones Bar & Fire Grill located at 2660 S. Dirksen Parkway in Springfield closed April 28.

Why is Smokey Bones closing?

The chain’s parent company, FAT (Fast, Authentic and Tasty) Brands, announced it was shifting business models for Smokey Bones in June 2025. The shift included plans to close several Smokey Bones locations and convert them into Twin Peaks, an adult-themed sports bar similar to Hooters.

FAT Brands entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January, however, along with Twin Hospitality Group, the public company that owned Twin Peaks and Smokey Bones.

FAT Brands had an auction scheduled for April 28 – the same day the Springfield location shut its doors.

Illinois locations dwindle from two to zero

Illinois previously had two Smokey Bones locations, before the Rockford restaurant closed in January and the Springfield location shut its doors Tuesday.

The Smokey Bones’ website shows every location is closed every day of the week, including the Springfield restaurant.

Meanwhile, a sign hung on the Springfield restaurant’s door reads, “This location in permanently closed. Smokey Bones has ceased operations at all locations. We thank you for all the years of letting us serve you.”
