Oneida County unveils Gerald J. Fiorini Aviation Complex

Oneida County has unveiled the renaming of the Oneida County Aviation Building at Griffiss International Airport in honor of former Board Chairman Gerald J. Fiorini.

The dedication recognizes Chairman Gerald Fiorini’s four decades of public service on the Board of Legislators, including 30 years as chairman, making him the longest-serving chairman in New York history.

As the tarp was taken down from the building, unveiling the Griffiss International Airport’s new name, Fiorini was smiling bashfully as the crowd clapped for a man with four decades worth of service to the community.

“Oneida County honors a true legend,” Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente Jr. said at the unveiling April 30 in Rome. “For 40 years, Jerry Fiorini served the people of this county with unmatched dedication, integrity and leadership. His impact can be seen in every corner of our community, and it is only fitting that his name will now be permanently associated with Griffiss International Airport — one of the county’s most important assets.”

“It was my distinct honor to work alongside Jerry for many years,” Picente added. “He was not only a partner I could always depend on, but also a mentor and a true friend. His leadership elevated this entire county, and his legacy will endure for generations.”

Oneida County officials said in a statement that Fiorni was known for his steady leadership and deep commitment to those he served and played a key role in shaping county policy and advancing initiatives that strengthened the region’s economy and quality of life.

“Whether securing legislative support for the siting of the Chobani dairy processing facility on a vacant portion of the airfield or driving the development of a premier baseball field complex nearby, Jerry has been integral to nearly every milestone at Griffiss International Airport since the earliest days,” said Board of Legislators Chairwoman Mary Austin Pratt.

Fiorini concluded his tenure on Dec. 17.
