Wellington flag football coach celebrates 100th career win

Wellington’s flag football regional victory on Wednesday, April 29 carried special significance for head coach Robert Callovi, but not just for the obvious reasons.

The victory, a 39-0 trouncing of Jupiter in the Class 4A regional quarterfinals, was Callovi’s 100th career win ― but while it carried personal significance for the 10-year head coach, he instead chose to speak about it as a testament to the team’s culture of success.

“It was just a cool moment to be able to celebrate what our program was able to achieve over these last 10 years, going from the verge of an afterthought to a state contender year in and out,” Callovi said.

Indeed when Callovi first took over the fledgling program, flag football as a whole was a sport still in the process of finding its place in high school sports. Ironically enough, Wellington’s rising arc has matched the blossoming popularity of the sport quite well.

“Before four years ago we had only competed for a district title one time in school history, and now we’ve got three in the last four, regionals twice, and one point within winning states last year,” Callovi said.

Competitive relevance is one thing; Wellington has been beyond that the last years, culminating in a 12-2 record to this point in the current season, matched by the No. 6 state and national MaxPreps ranking.

The 2026 season has not been without its challenges, especially in the growing-pains department. Nine seniors graduated from the program.

“We had a pretty good senior core that we had to find a way to replace, so from bringing in a new quarterback and new players, we’re still trying to figure it out a little bit,” Callovi admitted. “But it’s been a group that really gelled together. That’s made it easier.”

Those on the outside looking in might suggest the formula, whatever it may be, is working. Because despite replacing their quarterback and a number of key position players, the Wolverines are headed to the regional semifinals with a full head of steam as the No. 2 seed.
