Manitowoc Historical Society to host Mother’s Day weekend events with free admission for moms

The Manitowoc County Historical Society Museum and Pinecrest Village will celebrate Mother’s Day weekend May 9 with hands-on activities, demonstrations and free general admission for moms at 924 Pinecrest Road in Manitowoc.

Interpreters in the Historic Village will showcase 19th-century-era tasks and activities from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and visitors can explore historic homes, kitchens and heirloom gardens. The site is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A Mother’s Day tea begins at 1 p.m., featuring an afternoon tea and a fashion-through-history program. Guests may take dolls or stuffed animals; tea tickets include general admission. Advance registration is required.

Fundraiser skate night in Manitowoc to support Cindy Meyer after traumatic brain injury

A benefit ’80s-themed skate night to support Cindy Meyer will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at Rollaire Skate Center, 930 N. 18th St., Manitowoc.

All ages are welcome. Admission is $10 per person and includes regular rental skates; speed quad or inline rentals are available for $3 more. The event will include bucket raffles and a 50/50 raffle, with proceeds benefiting Meyer and her family.

Organizers said Meyer is recovering from a traumatic brain injury after a serious accident, and proceeds will help with ongoing medical and related expenses for her family.

Two Rivers electronics recycling and free shredding event set for May 16 at Hamilton Community House

A Spring Electronics Recycling and Shredding Event is scheduled for 9 a.m.-noon, Saturday, May 16, in the parking lot of the J.E. Hamilton Community House, 1520 17th St., Two Rivers.

Most electronics will be accepted for free. Fees apply for TVs (smaller than 30 inches, $15; larger than 30 inches, $30; flat-panel, $10), refrigerators/freezers (full size, $30; dorm, $5) and air conditioners ($5 each).

Free shredding is limited to five bags of paper per vehicle; organizers ask that binders and paper clips be removed.

The electronics drive is sponsored by the Two Rivers High School Octagon Club and the Two Rivers Optimist Club; shredding is sponsored by Fox Communities Credit Union. Call 920-794-4787 for more information.

Free museum admission in Manitowoc County: Member Swap Weekend May 14-17

Six local museums will offer free admission to members of participating organizations during Member Swap Weekend, running Thursday, May 14, through Sunday, May 17.

The event includes Farm Wisconsin Discovery Center, Manitowoc County Historical Society, Wisconsin Maritime Museum, Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum, Rahr-West Art Museum and Woodland Dunes. Members can visit the other participating sites at no cost by showing a valid membership card; museum hours vary.

Organizers recommend taking your card for walk-up admission. Eligibility may depend on membership level, and family memberships may require a card for each visitor. Some special exhibits or activities may carry an additional fee.

DAR honors Manitowoc cadet Shawn Bobbe Jr. with Outstanding Cadet Medal

Shawn Bobbe Jr. of Manitowoc received the Daughters of the American Revolution Outstanding Cadet Medal during a Plymouth Chapter reception at Mead Public Library in Sheboygan.

Regent Mitzi Schwertfeger presented Bobbe with a certificate and medal.

The honor recognizes cadets who demonstrate leadership, service and patriotism in military-affiliated cadet programs or volunteer public-safety training units.
