A man was killed by a falling tree shortly after warning his friends to move out of the way April 27 as extreme winds passed through West Michigan.
According to a release from the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place near Crinnion Avenue and 16 Mile Road in Courtland Township. The man, 39, of Solon Township, was pronounced dead on-scene.
Police said the man was outside with friends when strong winds and a thunderstorm moved through the area, causing multiple nearby trees to fall. According to his friends, the man warned them to move just before the tree came down, likely preventing more of them from being struck.
The incident remains under investigation.
