Brighton softball pitcher Bailey Hill throws perfect game

Brighton freshman Bailey Hill pitched a five-inning perfect game in the opening game of an 11-0, 11-1 softball sweep of Milford on Monday, April 27.

Hill struck out 10 of the 15 batters she faced, throwing strikes on 49 of 73 pitches.

Her outing lasted only five innings because Brighton scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to win via the 10-run mercy rule. A two-run single by Kendall Peckens ended the game. Peckens drove in three runs.

Emily Lovin was 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the first game and 3-for-3 in the second game.

The strong pitching continued for Brighton (6-10) in the second game, as Reese Vawter allowed only three hits and one run in five innings while facing only four batters over the minimum.

A two-run single by Holland Urbain in the bottom of the fifth invoked the mercy rule.

Ypsilanti Lincoln 12-10, Pinckney 1-7

Addison Wroblewski and Mollie Miller each drove in two runs in the second game for Pinckney (6-8).

Baseball

Brighton 1, Novi 0 (9 inn.)

Strong pitching performances for Brighton weren’t limited to the softball diamond, as Nick Brevik and Nate Houck combined to shut out Novi.

Brevik went the first seven innings, allowing only three hits and one walk while striking out nine. Brevik has pitched 14 shutout innings in his last two starts against two recent state championship teams, Northville and Novi, striking out 16 and walking only one.

Houck pitched the final two innings, striking out two and allowing only two hits and no walks.

Logan Veitengruber began the winning rally with a lead-off single in the bottom of the ninth. Ben Holster singled and Luke Ribble advanced the runners with a bunt before the winning run scored on an error off a ball hit by Josh Metz.

Northville 2, Hartland 1

Northville scored the tie-breaking run on a double play in the bottom of the fourth. Aidan Heidt delivered Hartland’s only run with a single in the second.

Michael Bernardi went six innings, allowing five hits and no walks for the Eagles (9-6), who are 2-5 in their last seven games.

Salem 4, Howell 0

Sawyer Schacht pitched a two-hitter for Salem, allowing only one walk and facing 24 batters in seven innings.

Pinckney 9-13, Ypsilanti Lincoln 5-3

Henry Taube was 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and five RBIs in the second game for Pinckney (6-8). Owen Zylka struck out 11 batters in six innings in the opener for the Pirates.

Lutheran Westland 14, Charyl Stockwell 4

Ryan Eikey and Dominic Neuenschwander each drove in two runs for Stockwell.

Girls lacrosse

South Lyon 9, Brighton 8

Kelly McKaig scored five goals and one assist, as Brighton came up a goal short in a matchup between the two teams who have won the last four state Division 1 championships. South Lyon ended Brighton’s three-year reign last season.

Hartland 16, Howell 2

Kaiya Osborn scored both goals for Howell.

Boys lacrosse

Brighton 17, Plymouth 4

Joey Skoczylas had eight goals, while Maddox Marlatt had three goals and six assists for unbeaten Brighton (9-0).

Hartland 25, Canton 1

Drew Schaecher had five goals and four assists, Clayton Penzien four goals and three assists, Coen Chwalek and Trevor Phillips three goals and two assists apiece, August Romzek three goals, and Liam Quick one goal and three assists for Hartland.
