LANSING — Three days after a mass shooting near downtown sent four adults and two children to the hospital with gunshot wounds, police said they are continuing to search for the gunman.
Police said Friday morning that a man with a gun walked up to the intersection of Chestnut and Hillsdale streets about 9:48 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, and fired into a crowd of 30-40 people, wounding six.
The area is a few blocks south of the state Capitol, between the Capitol complex and Interstate 496.
Lansing Police Public Information Director Jordan Gulkis confirmed just before 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 26, that police had not yet made an arrest. No description of the suspect has been released.
Police Chief Rob Backus said previously the victims ranged in age from 5 to 35, and all were expected to recover from their injuries.
The victims are a 35-year-old woman, 23-year-old woman, 21-year-old woman, a 31-year-old man and two girls, ages 14 and 5, Backus said.
All were reported in stable condition with injuries that were primarily to the lower extremities, although one person suffered a grazing wound to the ear, police said.
Backus said that as of Friday morning police didn’t know why the group had gathered and didn’t have information on a potential motive for the shooting. However, he said there have been previous “incidents” at that location, which meant police had cameras in place, and that department will increase its focus on that area.
Police are reviewing a significant amount of evidence.
“Anytime you have a gathering of 30 to 40 people and you have six shooting victims, there is a tremendous amount of evidence,” Backus said previously.
He said police would provide updates as the investigation progressed.
The area where the shooting took place has been a trouble spot in recent weeks.
On Feb. 16, police responded to an incident in which a man was shot in the foot. Gulkis said she could not determine the status of that investigation on Friday afternoon.
Police also responded to a shots fired incident in the area on Wednesday, April 22. No one was hurt in that shooting, and Gulkis said it was unclear whether it was related to Thursday night’s incident.
Backus said prior to the shooting that the city’s rate of nonfatal shootings was down by 50% from this point last year.
Police asked anyone with information to call the department at 517-483-4600, Crime Stoppers at 517-483-7867 or send a private message to the Lansing Police Department’s Facebook page.
