Cincinnati — The Tigers are taking the precautionary route with reliever Connor Seabold.
After reviewing the MRI on his injured left ankle, they opted to put him on the 15-day injured list and called up right-hander Brenan Hanifee from Triple-A Toledo.
Before the decision was made, Seabold thought he was going to be OK.
“I’m not worried about it,” he said. “And it doesn’t sound like (the Tigers) are worried about it, either.”
The Tigers, though, are worried about Seabold not making the injury worse. And they are also trying to get through the game Sunday with a bullpen that has covered 10.1 innings the last two days.
“We had a heavy day (Saturday), but these guys can post again,” manager AJ Hinch said. “Especially having the off day Monday. That helps.”
Seabold slipped while delivering a pitch Saturday night and fell awkwardly.
“It felt like one spike caught and the rest didn’t,” he said. “I don’t know if I jammed it or extended it too much in a direction I shouldn’t have. It didn’t feel great.”
Hanifee, a mainstay in the Tigers’ bullpen the last two seasons and among the final cuts out of spring, has been pitching well at Toledo. He’s pitched eight scoreless outings out of 10 and hasn’t allowed a run in his last three.
