2.9-magnitude earthquake shakes southern Ontario, felt in Michigan

A 2.9-magnitude earthquake hit just over 4 miles off the coast of Ontario, and felt by Downriver communities at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Communities including Trenton, Rockwood and Grosse Isle felt the quake, according to survey responses via the USGS “Did you feel it” tool. The quake occurred at a depth of just over 1 mile.

The most responses to the USGS “Did you feel it” survey came from Trenton, which is located just over 10 miles from the site of the earthquake.

The most intense shocks on the American side of the border were reported in South Rockwood, with an average intensity of 3.4, followed by Grosse Ile, with an average intensity of 3.2.

The intensity of an earthquake measures how much shaking occurs at each location, unlike magnitude, which is a single number measuring the size of the earthquake, according to the USGS.
