Brewers 5, Pirates 0: The offense finally awakens in the fourth

The Milwaukee Brewers close out their three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates seeking to avoid their second losing streak of at least five games this season on Sunday afternoon, April 26 at American Family Field.

Prior to this season, Milwaukee hadn’t lost more than four in a row since June 6-14, 2023 (six games).

Left-hander Kyle Harrison (1-1, 3.06) starts for the Brewers against right-hander Carmen Mlodzinski (1-1, 3.28).

The offense finally strings together a rally

After managing only a walk off Mlodzinski through three innings, the Brewers knocked him from the game in the fourth.

William Contreras led off with a single, Jake Bauers doubled him to third and a Gary Sánchez groundout pushed the first run across.

After Garrett Mitchell struck out, Sal Frelick reached on a catcher’s interference, Luis Rengifo singled in Bauers and David Hamilton doubled in Frelick. A Brandon Lockridge single drove in Rengifo and Hamilton and just like that Mlodzinski was done with Milwaukee having taken a 5-0 lead.

Hamilton’s double, by the way, was his first extra-base hit of the season.

A pitchers’ duel through three innings

Harrison was on point in the early going, striking out the side in the first inning and six of the first nine – five of those came on his four-seam fastball – with an unassisted Bauers double play helping the left-hander face the minimum through three.

His counterpart Mlodzinski was just as tough on Milwaukee’s offense, however, allowing only a Brandon Lockridge walk through his first three innings.
