Ohio students awarded more electric co-op scholarships

Firelands Electric Cooperative announced that two winners from its February scholarship contest have been selected to receive additional awards through Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives (OEC).

Haley McNaull of Ashland High School has been awarded a second-place, $3,600 scholarship as part of OEC’s Children of Members Scholarship competition. McNaull, the daughter of Greg and Julie McNaull, was the winner of Firelands Electric’s first-place, $1,800 scholarship earlier this year. She plans to major in horticulture and crop science at The Ohio State University next fall, according to the community announcement.

OEC’s Children of Members Scholarship program is designed to support students and invest in the future of co-op communities across the state. Each year, students from cooperative families across Ohio compete for scholarship awards that help them pursue higher education and career goals.

This year, a total of 24 students — each representing one of Ohio’s electric distribution cooperatives — advanced from local competitions to the statewide contest, which awarded a total of $56,100 in scholarships.

P.J. Ryan of Lucas was also awarded a scholarship from Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives. Ryan, who is enrolled in Stark State College’s paramedic to RN bridge program, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from Firelands Electric in February. He was recently selected to receive an additional $750 scholarship in OEC’s Trade School Scholarship contest.

The OEC trade scholarship program supports electric cooperative members and their dependents as they pursue certificates in accredited trade and technical programs, which helps meet the growing demand for skilled workers throughout Ohio.
