IU, Zimmer Biomet announce partnership to advance orthopedic research

Indiana University and Warsaw-based medical device company Zimmer Biomet on April 20 announced a three-year partnership aimed at hastening research and technology in the field of orthopedics.

The agreement, signed Monday afternoon by IU President Pamela Whitten and Zimmer Biomet CEO Ivan Tornos at IU Indianapolis’ Innovation Hall, states that the university and company will collaborate on research and development and work together to develop the medical workforce through technical training and credentialing.

Both parties will share personnel, information and technology in an attempt to address conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis and other musculoskeletal disorders and injuries.

The announcement comes six months after IU Indy broke ground on a five-story, 150,000-square foot facility in the 16 Tech Innovation District that will house the IU Launch Accelerator for Biosciences starting in 2027. IU LAB President David Rosenberg said researchers from IU and Zimmer Biomet will work together on several initiatives as part of the joint agreement.

“This partnership brings together IU’s world-class research, industry expertise and student and faculty talent to drive innovation and improve patient outcomes,” Whitten said in a prepared statement. “Zimmer Biomet’s global leadership in orthopedic care and deep roots in Indiana make them an exceptional partner as we work to help people maintain mobility, independence and quality of life.”

Zimmer Biomet brings nearly a century of experience in the field of orthopedic medicine to its partnership with IU. The company was founded in Warsaw, Indiana, in 1927; its first products were aluminum splints. Zimmer’s presence in Warsaw along with that of medical device producer DePuy Synthes, which began as DePuy Manufacturing in 1895, helped the city over time became known to some as the orthopedic capital of the world.

The Zimmer Biomet partnership marks the third all-services agreement for IU in the last year; the university announced partnerships with Cook Medical in September and Eli Lilly in December.
