The Los Angeles Rams and quarterback Matthew Stafford have both confirmed that their partnership will continue into 2026 after brief retirement rumors circulated before Stafford won his first MVP award. While Stafford is under contract for 2026, the final year of his current deal, both parties have had a long-standing agreement that they will enter year-to-year negotiations to hammer out terms, especially when it comes to guaranteed money.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport provided an update on Stafford’s contract situation Monday, saying that while no deal is done, there have been talks regarding an extension. The two sides have made “significant progress” on an extension that will get him in the building for the offseason program.
It’s unclear at this time if there will be more years added onto Stafford’s current deal or if this is to work out the details of what Stafford’s financial picture looks like this season. The Rams are not expected to finalize any deals for players under contract until after the NFL draft. However, barring any unexpected turns, Stafford will be back for the Rams this season.
In 2025, Stafford led the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns, on his way to his first MVP award. He also led all postseason passers in completions, passing yards, and passing touchdowns. In 20 total games, Stafford tossed just nine interceptions in over 600 passing attempts.
