A wrong-way driver died after causing a three-vehicle crash just before midnight April 19 on I-196 near Douglas.
According to a release from the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a 911 call around 11:38 p.m. about a driver traveling northbound on southbound I-196. As units were en-route, officers with the Douglas Police Department discovered a crash near mile marker 39 in the southbound lanes.

The crash involved the wrong-way driver and two semi-trucks. First responders extricated the wrong-way driver, who was the lone occupant of their vehicle, and began life-saving measures — which were unsuccessful. No one else was injured.
No additional information was provided about the driver or their vehicle, though officials wrote alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash.
