Meadowbrook's Sommer Ginn hits for cycle: Top performers

SUGARCREEK — Sometimes a box score doesn’t tell the whole story, but for Meadowbrook senior Sommer Ginn, it tells a legendary one. Despite a doubleheader sweep at the hands of host Garaway on Saturday, April 18, Ginn put on a hitting clinic for the ages, Headlined by a Game 2 performance where she hit for the cycle.

Ginn was an unstoppable force at the plate, finishing the day 5-for-8. Her Game 2 masterpiece included a single, double, triple and a home run, accounting for two RBIs in the 11-7 loss. Over the two-game span, she tallied two home runs and four RBIs, essentially serving as a one-woman highlight reel.

In the opening game 9-2 loss, offense was hard to come by as Meadowbrook (9-5) was limited to just three hits. McKendall Boyer finished 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, while Ginn provided the only scoring with her two-run blast.

The Meadowbrook bats came alive in the nightcap, despite the 11-7 final. Jordyn Vargeson banged out three hits with a double and two singles, while Natalee Norman belted a solo home run with an RBI. Addy Sichina and Addy Randles each collected a pair of base hits

Saturday, April 18 results

BASEBALL

Wheeling Central Catholic 13, Barnesville 0: Game 1 of the Barnesville Baseball Diamond Classic was one sided in favor of the Maroon Knights who tallied five first-inning runs to jumpstart the shutout over the host Shamrocks.

Barnesville (9-3) was limited to just seven hits with Blake Burkhart and Dylan Blon each finishing with a pair in the loss.

Warren 4, Caldwell 1: A visiting Warriors squad broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth inning to collect the marathon victory over Caldwell in a hard-fought matchup.

Jake Laswell got a no decision despite turning in a lights-out effort on the mound for Caldwell, working eight strong innings, allowing only one run on two hits with 15 Ks.

Laswell led the CHS offense with a double and single with Kyler Starr chipping in with a pair of base hits. Guiler Preston ripped a double and Izic Cool delivered an RBI single.

Friday, April 17 Results

SOFTBALL

Meadowbrook 9, New Philadelphia 6: Unleashing an 11 hit attack, the Colts reeled off their fourth straight win over the visiting Quakers during non-league action Friday, April 17.

Senior Sommer Ginn led the way with a 3-4 night with a double, two singles with three RBIs for Meadowbrook (9-3), with senior Addy Sichina and sophomore Emma Ginn each chipped in with a double, single and RBI. Junior Chloe Callahan finished with a pair of base hits with an RBI.

Sichina picked up the win in a relief outing to improve to 3-1 on the season, allowing just one run on two hits with two strikeouts in three innings of work.

Barnesville 3, Buckeye Local 1: Peyton Loudin unleashed a strong complete game pitching effort to lead the Shamrocks to the road win over the Panthers on Friday, April 17.

Loudin allowed just one run on three hits with a career high 13 Ks and two walks to collect the win for Barnesville (10-7).

Becklee Oliver banged out a pair of singles with two RBIs to lead Barnesville’s six hit offense, Mariah Schaffer and Sophie Carpenter each stroked doubles, while Roselyne Anderson chipped in with an RBI single for the winners.

Edison 13, Cambridge 3: A slow start resulted in the Bobcats slipping to 6-10 on the season in a six-inning setback to a strong Wildcats squad on Friday, April 17 at the Cambridge City Park.

Edison erupted for five runs in the first and five more in the sixth to take control that they held onto for the road victory to improve to 11-5.

Senior Miranda Cole led the Bobcats with a home run and two RBIs while Taylor Warden and senior Laney Harper had a pair of singles each.

BASEBALL

Martins Ferry 9, Barnesville 1: Offense proved to be a problem for the ‘Rocks in dropping a lopsided Buckeye 8 Conference decesion to the visiting Purple Riders on Friday, April 17.

Barnesville (9-2) managed just seven hits in the loss, with Parker Sobutka collecting a pair of singles.

Thursday, April 16 Results

BASEBALL

Meadowbrook 13, River View 1: The Colts (7-3) banging out 16 hits in collecting their third straight win rolling past the Bears in MVL baseball action Thursday, April 16.

Austin Warner led the way with a double, two singles with three RBIs, Kam Winnett with a double, two singles, Devin Wells doubled and Braylon Lowery singled with a pair of RBIs. Kolton Perez singled twice with two RBIs, with Blake Lappert and Tre Gray each collected a pair of base hits with an RBI.

Winnett worked six innings to earn the pitching win for the Colts, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

West Muskingum 4, John Glenn 1: The Muskies three-game winning streak was snapped with a tight MVL loss to the visiting Tornadoes despite holding a 5-4 edge in hits on Thursday, April 16.

Senior Owen Edwards absorbed the hard luck pitching loss, allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts, one walk in three innings of work for John Glenn (3-8).

Jensen Parry paced the Muskies with a double, single, while Edwards ripped a double.

Union Local 12, Cambridge 2: The Bobcats suffered a tough Buckeye 8 Conference road trip Thursday, April 16 with the loss squaring the season series between the two squads at Union Local High School. The Bobcats defeated the Jets 6-5 during the first week of the season.

Union Local capitalized on three big innings to open an 11-2 lead and then added a single run in the bottom of the sixth to trigger the “mercy rule” win over Cambridge.

Senior Garrett Carpenter and Michael Micale each had two hits in the game for the Bobcats (6-6) who managed only six total hits.

SOFTBALL

John Glenn 5, West Muskingum 0: Muskies’ sophomore ace Kendall Snider turned in another dominating performance in the circle to collect the MVL shutout over the Tornadoes.

Snider racked up 16 strikeouts, allowing just two hits in five scoreless innings of work for the victory with John Glenn improving to 13-2 on the season.

John Glenn senior Addi Babcock collected a double, two singles with an RBI, while Snider, Estelle Matheney and Delaney Bell each added RBI base hits in the victory.

Caldwell 4, Marietta 1: Senior standout Makayla Mumaw picked up another impressive win from the circle to lead Caldwell past the Tigers on Thursday, April 16.

Mumaw allowed just one run on two hits in a seven inning complete game outing, finishing with nine strikeouts and no walks to earn the pitching win.

Senior Lexi Franklin doubled, singled to lead Caldwell (10-2), while Mumaw belted a solo home run and Amaya Moten chipped in with an RBI base hit for the winners.

Meadowbrook 6, River View 5: The Colts rallied from a four run deficit to collect the MVL win over the Bears to improve to 8-3 on the year in action on Thursday, April 16.

McKendall Boyer tossed four scoreless innings to earn the pitching win for Meadowbrook, allowing just two hits with five Ks.

Boyer helped out offensively with a double, single and a pair of RBIs, with Addy Randles adding a double, single with an RBI. Jordyn Vargeson, Addie Schultice and Natalee Norman each finished with a pair of RBIs.

BOYS TENNIS

Wheeling Central Catholic 4, Cambridge 3: The Bobcats tennis team dropped a close tight match to host Crusaders on Thursday, April 16.

The Bobcats picked up a pair of wins in doubles play with Silas Hutchison and Quentin Stora defeating James Potts and Austin Schwanker 8-5 at second doubles and Tyler Oliver and Loukas Laughman handling Dylan Evans and Josh Perry, 8-6, at second doubles.

In singles matches, Cambridge’s Jacob Vincent defeated Levi Anderson 8-6 in a hard-fought competitive match.

Wednesday, April 15 Results

BASEBALL

Barnesville 7, Martins Ferry 4: The Shamrocks are officially on a roll…after suffering an opening day loss to rival Union Local, the ‘Rocks have now reeled off nine consecutive victories after the Buckeye 8 Conference victory over the Purple Riders to improve to 9-1 on the season.

Shamrocks head coach D.J. Butler explained it wasn’t one of their best efforts, but his red-hot squad found a way to get the job done.

“It wasn’t one of our better efforts, but we’ve won when we’ve played flawless baseball and we’ve won by coming from behind at Cambridge,” veteran Barnesville head coach D.J. Butler said. “We found another way to win today, so, hopefully, winning that way will help us when tournament time rolls around.”

Senior Dylan Blon picked up the win with six strikeouts and three walks in four-plus innings. Keegan Martin relieved and fanned one. They teamed on a five-hitter.

Barnesville banged out nine singles, with Aidan Caldwell collecting a pair. Blake Burkhart, Blon and Parker Sobutka had RBI singles.

Buckeye Trail 7, Conotton Valley 1: A four-run second inning rally jumpstarted the Warriors (5-2) to the IVC victory over the host Rockets on Wednesday, April 15.

Sam Wayble turned in a solid five and two-thirds innings of work to earn the win on the mound, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts and four walks.

Sammy Brown and Chase Miller each doubled, singled to pace Buckeye Trail’s offense, with Wayble and Tyler Harrell each collecting singles with two RBIs. Sawyer Cox chipped in with an RBI base hit for the winners.

Cambridge 3, St. Clairsville 2: The Bobcats snapped a five-game slide with a Buckeye 8 Conference victory over the Red Devils on Wednesday, April 15.

Strong pitching and solid defense were the keys for the Bobcats who struggled with walks and errors during their recent losing streak. Wednesday.

Brody Lathem drew the starting assignment on the mound for CHS, and pitched into the sixth inning. Lathem allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out three and walked only one to collect the win. Senior Garrett Carpenter came on in the sixth to close the game for the save.

Cambridge (6-5) collected nine hits, with Carpenter leading the way with a 3-4 effort with a double, while Javon Lowery added a pair of base hits and scored a run. Konner McIntire stroked a single with two RBIs.

Eastern Reedsville 11, Caldwell 2: Offense was in short supply for the Caldwell baseball team resulting in the road loss on Wednesday, April 15 to slip to the .500 mark at 4-4 on the season.

Izic Cool singled twice to lead the four-hit CHS attack, with Cameron Sidwell and Silas Cain each collecting base hits.

Sidwell took the hard luck pitching loss for Caldwell, allowing six unearned runs on just three hits with five strikeouts, one walk.

SOFTBALL

Caldwell 4, Fort Frye 3: Senior standout Makyla Mumaw belted a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie to help Caldwell put an end to a two-game losing skid on Wednesday, April 15.

Kaki Astorga hurled a complete game three-hitter to pick up the pitching win for CHS, finishing with six Ks and eight walks.

Mumaw added a double to her game winning ‘Big Fly’ and finished with two RBIs for Caldwell who improved to 9-2 on the year. Junior Breighlee Moracco doubled, singled with two RBIs and senior Lexi Franklin banged out a pair of base hits.

Tuesday, April 14 Results

BASEBALL

John Glenn 6, Morgan 3: The Muskies made it three straight wins by doubling up the Raiders for the MVL baseball victory on Tuesday, April 14.

Keegan Wolford allowed no hits in two and one-third innings of scoreless work for John Glenn (3-7), picking up three strikeouts with two walks en route to collecting the pitching victory. Wolford also aided his own cause with a single that plated a pair of RBIs.

Reid Howard banged out a pair of singles with an RBI, while Zane Townse singled with a pair of RBIs. Keegan Halsey and Carter Merry each added RBI base hits for the Muskies.

Meadowbrook 9, Coshocton 4: Cohen Miles came up with a big night to lead the Colts to the MVL win over Coshocton on Tuesday, April 14.

Miles led the Meadowbrook offense with a triple, single with three RBIs, and then collected the win on the mound with a complete game outing. He allowed four runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts, three walks.

Rounding out the Colts offensive output was Braylon Lowery and Brady Arnold who each singled twice with an RBI. Austin Warner stroked a pair of base hits with two RBIs and Steven Beach added an RBI single.

SOFTBALL

John Glenn 5, Morgan 3: Sophomore ace Kendall Snider did her damage at the plate instead of the pitching circle to lead the Muskies (12-2) past the Raiders in MVL action on Tuesday, April 14.

Snider belted a home run, doubled with an RBI to pace John Glenn’s 14-hit attack, with Addi Babcock hitting a home run with a single and RBI. Estelle Matheney doubled, singled with an RBI, Bella Daniels doubled and Ava Miller slugged a solo home run with an RBI.

Delaney Bell collected the win in the circle for John Glenn, working five and two-thirds innings with six strikeouts and no walks.

Meadowbrook 9, Coshocton 0: Senior McKendall Boyer provided a solid double-double performance to lead the Colts to the MVL road win over Coshocton.

Boyer collected the win in the pitching circle, tossing a complete game two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts, two walks. Boyer then inflicted plenty of damage with her bat, banging out a double, two singles and five RBIs.c

Senior Sommer Ginn nearly hit for the cycle with a triple, double, single with a pair of RBIs, freshman Addie Schultice collected three singles with an RBI. Natalee Norman banged out two base hits, and senior Addy Sichina stroked an RBI double for the winners.

Monroe Central 15, Barnesville 4: A shaky defensive effort with eight errors against the Seminoles proved too much to overcome for the Shamrocks resulting in the lopsided loss on Tuesday, April 15.

Ella Betts went 3-4 for Barnesville (9-6) with three singles and an RBI, with Roselyne Anderson chipping in with a double, single, RBI and Sophie Carpenter ripped a double.

Monday, April 13 Results

BASEBALL

Barnesville 15, Cambridge 5: The ‘Rocks roared back from an early 5-0 deficit to rally to collect their eighth consecutive victory with the five-inning mercy rule victory over the Bobcats at the Barnesville Memorial Park.

Robby Thompson worked five innings with two strikeouts to pick up the win on the mound for Barnesville (8-1).

Brayden Watters paced the seven-hit ‘Rocks offense with a single, double with three RBIs, while Blake Burkhart ripped a double with four RBIs. Aidan Caldwell chipped in with a base hit and two RBIs, Parker Sobutka, Jexten Swallie and Jack Anderson each added RBI base hits.

Tate Sikora, Michael Micale, and Carter Gebhart all had two hits for Cambridge (5-4).

Buckeye Trail 4, Conotton Valley 1: A two-run rally jumpstarted the Warriors to a perfect 4-0 start to season with the IVC victory over the Rockets on Monday, April 13.

Tied at 1-1 after two innings, Buckeye Trail took control with a pair or runs on RBI singles from Sammy Brown and Cameron Creighton in the third inning.

Chase Miller earned the win on the mound, allowing one run on four hits with seven Ks in five and two-thirds innings of work for Trail.

Brown finished with a pair of base hits with an RBI to lead the Warriors six-hit attack, with Sam Wayble and Sawyer Cox each collecting singles in the IVC victory.

John Glenn 8, Morgan 7: The Muskies (2-7) held off the visiting Raiders to pick up the MVL victory in action from Monday, April 13.

Carter Merry worked four innings, allowing three runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts to collect the win on the mound for John Glenn.

Keegan Wolford led the John Glenn offense with a double, single with two RBIs, while senior Owen Edwards singled twice with two RBIs. Merry added a pair of base hits and Reid Howard stroked a double for the Muskies.

Caldwell 5, Monroe Central 1: Jake Laswell turned in a complete game effort to lead Caldwell baseball to the victory to climb above the .500 mark at 4-3 on the season.

Laswell allowed eight hits and one unearned run, while racking up eight Ks to pick up the pitching win for Caldwell.

Laswell and Jonah Moracco each banged out a pair of base hits, with senior Guiler Preston chipped in with a single and three RBIs for the winners.

Meadowbrook 9, Coshocton 4: Senior Braylon Lowery turned in a solid relief outing to lead the Colts past visiting Coshocton for the MVL victory on Monday, April 13.

Lowery allowed just one run on two hits with two strikeouts in a solid five-inning outing to earn the pitching win for the host Colts.

Austin Warner tripled with two singles, RBI to lead the Meadowbrook (5-3) offense, Brady Arnold added a double, single with three RBIs. Steven Beach collected two singles, with Kam Winnett and Blake Lappert each picking up base hits.

SOFTBALL

Barnesville 8, Cambridge 4: Ella Betts turned in a strong performance to help the Shamrocks double up the Bobcats in the non-league victory on Monday, April 13.

Betts tossed a complete game four-hitter with nine strikeouts to earn the pitching victory for Barnesville (9-7), she then aided her own cause at the plate with a two-run home run.

Cambridge (6-8) scored two runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the sixth inning but couldn’t keep pace with the Shamrocks who put up three runs in the third and fifth innings before adding a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Emma Swan added a pair of base hits and scored three runs, with Abby Addy collecting an RBI single. Peyton Loudin finished with a pair of RBIs for the Shamrocks.

Meadowbrook 13, Coshocton 1: The Colts erupted for an eight-run second inning to coast past Coshocton for the five-inning MVL mercy victory on Monday, April 13.

Senior McKendall Boyer paced the offensive surge with a double, single and four RBIs, with senior Addy Sichina chipping in with a home run, double with three RBIs. Addy Randles ripped a pair of doubles with an RBI, Addie Schultice collecting a double, single and RBI. Meadowbrook junior Natalee Norman and senior Sommer Ginn each tripled with RBIs.

Sichina worked five innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits with eight strikeouts, two walks to record the pitching win for Meadowbrook (6-3).

Monroe Central 9, Caldwell 1: The visiting Seminoles flexed heir muscle early to jump out to a lead to pick up the road win over Caldwell on Monday, April 13.

Monroe Central belted a pair of home runs to take a 5-0 lead after just two innings of play to take control of the game.

Caldwell (8-2) was held to just two hits in the loss, Cecelia Marshall ripped a double and freshman Mea Hendershot singled. Junior Breighlee Moracco collected the lone RBI for CHS.

John Glenn 6, Morgan 0: Muskies’ sophomore ace Kendall Snider turned in another dominant effort from the pitching circle to blank the Raiders in MVL softball action on Monday, April 13.

Snider allowed just four hits in a complete game outing for John Glenn (11-2), finishing with an impressive 15 strikeouts without issuing a free pass to collect the shutout victory.

Addi Babcock paced John Glenn’s 11-hit attack with a single, double with three RBIs, while Estelle Matheney banged out three base hits. Morgan Harper singled twice with an RBI, with Snider and Ava Miller each collecting RBI singles for the winners.

BOYS TENNIS

Cambridge 4, West Holmes 1: The Bobcats boys tennis team defeated West Holmes 4-1 in tennis action on Monday night at the Cambridge City Park courts.

Cambridge’s Jacob Vincent served a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins over Jonny Shedron at first singles. Ezekiel Bergeson took second singles 6-2, 6-3 over Jevin Zheng.

In doubles’ action the Bobcats picked up a sweep, Silas Hutchison and Quentin Stora won 6-0, 6-2 over Raven Stracke and Alex McCulloch and Tyler Oliver and Steele Britton beat Aubree Young and Alexis Wagers, 6-0, 6-1.
