FSU baseball vs. Notre Dame: Live updates, highlights from Game One

The No. 10 Florida State Seminoles are set to start their series against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Friday in Tallahassee, Florida, and it’s nearly time for the first pitch at Dick Howser Stadium.

FSU (25-11, 9-6 ACC) is looking to build on its dominant 9-2 win over Stetson on Tuesday. Hunter Carns had another excellent day, going 3-5 with a three-run homer, 5 RBI, and two runs scored. The sophomore now has a team-high .348 batting average after his hot streak.

The Seminoles are hitting .277 as a team and scoring 7.4 runs per game. They have 69 doubles, 46 home runs, and have stolen 36 bases. They have struckout 351 times and walked 186 times.

FSU’s pitching staff has a 4.28 ERA, allowing 164 runs in 301 innings. They have given up 258 hits and 29 home runs. They have struckout 387 batters and walked 146.

While he admitted that the majority of the players he coaches are gone, FSU head coach Link Jarrett was Notre Dame’s head coach from 2020-22 before coming to Tallahassee. He spent three seasons with them, going 86-32 and leading them to the 2022 College World Series.

Notre Dame (17-15, 7-11) has lost nine of its last 11 games but did beat Valparaiso 6-1 on Tuesday. They have struggled in conference play, losing their last three series to fall to 13th in the ACC’s standings. FSU is in fourth.

The Fighting Irish are hitting .293 as a team and scoring 7.9 runs per game. They have 57 doubles, 49 home runs, and have stolen 30 bases. They have struckout 299 times and walked 165 times. Their pitching staff has a 5.97 ERA, allowing 207 runs in 285 innings

Florida State is 27-17 all-time against Notre Dame, including 16-7 at home. They have played every year since 2014, except for 2020, and FSU has won five of the last six meetings, including sweeping them in 2024 at Howser.

FSU adds on

John Stuetzer blows it open for FSU

The Seminoles have turned the game into a rout with a three-run homer by John Stuetzer in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking an 8-0 lead. They have scored four runs in the inning.

Notre Dame makes a pitching change

The Fighting Irish have made a pitching change, going to Eli Thurmond to start the sixth inning. Xavier Hirsh allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks with eight strikeouts.

Mid 6th: FSU 4, Notre Dame 0

Wes Mended allowed a one-out hit in the sixth, but he recovered with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. He has seven strikeouts through six innings on 102 pitches. He has allowed three hits and walked two batters.

FSU strands another runner

The Seminoles stranded another runner in the fifth inning, failing to capitalize on Gabe Fraser’s two-out single and stolen base. They have stranded seven runners and are hitting 3-13 with runners on.

Wes Mendes escapes again

Notre Dame threatened to cut into FSU’s lead after a one-out walk, and an error by Cal Fisher put two runners on. Wes Mendes once again worked around it, getting a pop-up and a groundout to end the inning and keep FSU up 4-0 entering the bottom of the fifth.

End 4th: FSU 4, Notre Dame

FSU got two more insurance runs in the fourth on another Notre Dame error on a bunt by Chase Williams. The Fighting Irish have made three errors through four innings.

FSU adds on, goes up 4-0

The Semioles have doubled their lead over Notre Dame in the fourth. Chase Williams bunted with runners at the corners, and the second baseman was unable to see the ball while covering first, allowing two runners to score and Williams to get to third with one out.

FSU is threatening in the 4th inning

Carter McCulley started the threat with an infield single and took second on an error before Brayden Dowd walked and McCully got third on a wild pitch, putting runners at the corners with one out. The Seminoles lead 2-0.

Wes Mendes is in control for FSU

Mendes hit a batter with one out in the fourth inning, but had no trouble standing him there with a lineout and a groundout. He has thrown 64 pitches through four innings with five strikeouts.

End 3rd: FSU strands two more runners

The Seminoles got two more base runners in the third inning, but they were both stranded, and FSU is still up 2-0. They have stranded five runners through three innings.

Wes Mendes keeps Notre Dame off the board

Wes Mendes had his first tough inning of the game, allowing two hits and letting Notre Dame put two runners in scoring position with two outs. He was able to end the threat with a strikeout. FSU leads 2-0 entering the bottom of the third inning.

End 2nd: FSU 2, Notre Dame 0

Brayden Dowd worked a two-out walk for FSU, but that was all they managed in the second. Notre Dame starter Xavier Hirsh has four strikeouts through two innings, but has thrown 40 pitches.

FSU turns a double play

Wes Mendes has a leadoff walk, but he quickly recovered with a strikeout and a double play to end the top of the second inning. The runner attempted to steal second, and the batter lined out to allow an easy two outs.

End 1: FSU 2, Notre Dame 0

Florida State has stormed out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Brayden Dowd and Nathan Cmeyla both doubled in the inning. Cam Fisher and Chase Williams both reached on infield singles.

The Seminoles are up 2-0 after Nathan Cmeyla doubled home Brayden Dowd and Hunter Carns with one out. Dowd doubled to start the game, and Carns reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring from first.

FSU is threatening

The Seminoles are already in business, getting a leadoff double from Brayden Dowd. It is his 8th of the season and gives FSU a great chance to take an early lead.

Mendes has been excellent all season for the Seminoles and will look to keep it going against Notre Dame. He allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings in his last start against Georgia Tech. He will be pitching on an extra day’s rest since that game was on Thursday.

Hirsch is making just his second start of the season for the Fighting Irish. He allowed two runs in 4.0 innings last week on two hits and two walks. His longest outing this season was 5.0 innings.
