The man accused of first-degree murder in Illinois state court for the Chicago shooting of Yorktown native Sheridan Gorman, 18, also faces a federal gun charge.
Jose Medina, 25, who was ordered detained by a Cook County, Illinois, judge on March 27 on the state charges, has been charged federally with illegal possession of a firearm, according to the complaint in U.S. District Court in Chicago, the U.S. Attorney’s office April 2 news release said.
The search was part of the state investigation into the homicide.
Chicago police found the gun during a search of the suspect’s residence on Chicago’s North Side, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Northern District of Illinois. His initial federal court date was not immediately known.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has said the suspect is from Venezuela and in the United States illegally and identified him as Jose Medina-Medina. The U.S. Attorney’s office also identified him as Medina-Medina.
The suspect’s other charges in state court in the case are attempted murder and three counts of aggravated assault/discharge firearm.
Gorman, a Loyola University Chicago freshman, and friends left campus and walked to a nearby beach. At the beach, Gorman walked ahead of the group to a lighthouse on a pier and encountered Medina, who was hiding behind the lighthouse, a March news release from the state’s attorney’s office said. Gorman walked back toward her friends, the defendant allegedly followed with a gun and opened fire on the group as they fled and Gorman was struck in the back, according to the state’s attorney’s office.
Medina had an arrest warrant stemming from failure to appear in court for a 2023 misdemeanor retail theft offense, the news release said.
