New York State Police shot and killed an erratic driver in Lafayette, Onondaga County, early Sunday after the driver allegedly struck a woman in a yard twice.
The erratic driver
Troopers were called to Shute Road in LaFayette around 1:35 a.m. Sunday, April 12, as it was reported that an erratic driver was traveling through residential yards at a high rate of speed, according to State Police.
Woman struck by car
The driver – a woman whose name was not released – struck a woman with her car before police arrived at the scene. A man attempted to stop the driver by moving his car into the path of the alleged erratic driver. The driver rammed her car into his stopped vehicle, troopers said. The man was still inside.
A trooper at the scene saw the driver “operate the vehicle in a manner that endangered individuals on scene,” which included again running over the already injured woman on the ground, as well as striking a second man who was trying to help the inured woman, according to State Police.
Driver shot by trooper
Despite repeated orders from troopers to stop, the driver did not. A trooper fired a division-issued firearm and struck the driver – who was alone in her car. The driver was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where she was pronounced dead, according to State Police.
Second woman dies, 2 men injured
The woman who was struck by the car was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.
The two men who had attempted to help the injured woman and stop the driver – one in his vehicle and one on the road – were taken to Upstate University Hospital to be treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
What’s next?
The investigation is underway by New York State Police. The New York State Attorney General’s Office was also summoned to the scene. Further details were not released.
