Baylee’s big day: Baylee DeSmit scored goals in the 14th and 51st minutes for Sporting Club Jacksonville women’s soccer, winning an all-Florida contest 4-1 at Fort Lauderdale United in the Gainbridge Super League on April 11.
Early edge: DeSmit, now up to nine goals this year, punished a poor Fort Lauderdale clearance on her first goal and notched a spinning goal off a corner for her second. In between, Paige Kenton tallied her 10th goal of the season in the 25th minute off Meg Hughes’ pass from the left wing.
She’s back: Former Florida Gators midfielder Parker Roberts made her first start for Sporting Jax (14-4-5) since her preseason ACL tear. She played 65 minutes before exiting for Caroline Murray.
Quick free kicks: Sporting Jax also profited from an own goal when Kenton raided down the left and a failed Fort Lauderdale clearance ricocheted off the hosts’ Shea Moyer and into the net. … Sh’nia Gordon scored the lone goal for Fort Lauderdale (5-10-8) in the 56th minute. … Former Ponte Vedra High School defender Maggie Mace started and played 74 minutes. … Sporting Jax played without central defender Georgia Brown, on assignment with Scotland’s national team for FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying against Belgium. … Sporting Jax, unbeaten in seven consecutive games, outshot Fort Lauderdale 19-6.
Up next: Sporting Jax makes its longest road trip of the season, traveling to Spokane Zephyr FC at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 19.
