A driver was killed when his SUV was hit from behind by a car during a multi-vehicle accident in West El Paso, police said.
The deadly crash occurred about 9:15 p.m. on Monday, April 6, in the 6300 block of North Desert Boulevard near Paseo Del Norte Boulevard and Artcraft Road, stated an El Paso Police Department news release by Detective Judy Oviedo.
Jaime Humberto Andrade, 56, of El Paso, died at a hospital after a rear-end crash that followed a separate collision involving four vehicles on North Desert, police said.
Andrade was driving a 2026 Subaru Outback when it was struck from behind at a high speed by a 2016 BMW 428i driven by Ambar Chavira, 19, of El Paso, police said.
Chavira was arrested on a charge of collision involving death and booked into the El Paso County Jail in Downtown on a $100,000 bond, according to police and jail records. She had posted a surety bond by Tuesday afternoon and her release was pending.
Alcohol is suspected of being a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation by the Special Traffic Investigations Unit along with the DWI Task Force, police said.
The roadway was opened before 6 a.m. Tuesday, after the scene was cleared, according to a post by the Texas Department of Transportation on X.
There have been 15 traffic-related deaths in El Paso this year, including two pedestrians killed in separate collisions on Easter Sunday in Downtown, compared with 19 at the same time last year, according to Police Department figures.
