What DT options do Giants have following Dexter Lawrence trade request?

Dexter Lawrence wants out of New York.

News of Lawrence’s discontent with the New York Giants, first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday, comes at an interesting time for the franchise.

Lawrence anchors the first line of the Giants’ defense. The two-time second-team All-Pro has led New York’s pass rush for years. Now that he no longer wishes to remain with the team, the Giants have a clearer picture of how to approach the 2026 NFL draft.

Defensive tackle was already a position where the Giants had room to add talent this offseason. Pairing a young prospect next to Lawrence had been viewed as an ideal plan for the team.

That outlook has now shifted. The Giants’ No. 37 overall pick in the second round of the draft has taken on new significance. Ohio State defensive tackle Kayden McDonald has a high likelihood of being selected in the first round, as does Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods.

Texas Tech defensive tackle Lee Hunter is likely to be available in the second round. The 6-foot-4, 330-pound Hunter possesses impressive athleticism.

Penn State defensive tackle Zane Durant is another strong fit who could be available in the later rounds. Durant moves gracefully for a player at his position and recorded the fastest 40-yard dash time among all defensive tackles at the 2026 NFL Combine.

The Giants also have options in free agency. D.J. Reader stands out as one of the top interior defensive linemen available and a strong candidate for the team to pursue.

With $6.4 million in cap space, the Giants have some flexibility to target a replacement for Lawrence or to add depth in case the front office does not move quickly to address his trade request.
