Here's why CVG's airport control tower was evacuated over weekend

HEBRON, KY – The airport control tower at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport was evacuated twice April 5, the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed.

Both times, the evacuation occurred because fire alarms went off. But there was no fire at the airport, the FAA said in a statement to The Enquirer.

The first evacuation was around 5:47 a.m. and lasted about 18 minutes. The tower was evacuated again around 6:30 p.m. for about 25 minutes.

“Per standard protocols, the Indianapolis Air Route Traffic Control Center assumed control of the tower’s airspace,” the FAA wrote.

The airport has not responded to an email requesting comment about the incident.

It’s unclear if flights were affected by the evacuation.

Last year, the airport served almost 9 million passengers, according to its website. It’s also home to the largest Amazon Air hub in the world and is the sixth largest cargo airport in North America.
