Florida basketball center Rueben Chinyelu was named the 2026 Naismith Defensive Player of the Year on Sunday at the Naismith Awards Brunch, becoming the first Gator to claim the honor since the award was established in 2018.
The award is an annual basketball honor given to the most outstanding defensive player in the sport.
The recognition caps what has been a remarkable individual season for the 6-foot-10-inch center from Enugwu-Agidi, Nigeria, who has established himself as one of the most dominant defensive forces in college basketball.
Chinyelu’s path to the award was built on a season that spoke for itself. The junior averaged 10.9 points, 11.2 rebounds and a block per game while anchoring a Florida defense that suffocated opponents night after night throughout the regular season. His presence in the paint changed the way opposing offenses attacked the basket, and his rebounding numbers ranked among the best in the SEC all season.
Despite the individual spotlight, Chinyelu made clear Sunday that the award belongs to more than just himself.
“It’s not about me, honestly, it’s about my teammates, it’s about the belief they have in me, it’s about the chemistry we have,” Chinyelu said. “The more you know your teammates, then you know how to pay with them, how to play off them, how to help off them.”
The Naismith Defensive Player of the Year is just the latest in a long line of honors for Chinyelu this season. He also took home SEC Defensive Player of the Year, SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned spots on the All-SEC Second Team and the SEC All-Defensive Team—a complete sweep of the conference’s top defensive accolades.
Chinyelu arrived at Florida after one season with Washington State, where he averaged 4.7 points and five rebounds as a freshman. The leap he made under Todd Golden has been one of the most compelling development stories in college basketball, and Sunday’s award is the ultimate validation of that growth.
