What stores are open and closed on Easter Sunday in California?

Easter is this Sunday, marking an important holiday in the Christian faith.

“The Christian church determined in the fourth century A.D. that Easter should be observed on the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring on or after the spring equinox,” History.com said.

Because of this, Easter can fall anywhere between March 22 and April 25.

This year, the holiday falls on April 5 and some retail and grocery stores will be closed on the day in observance of the holiday.

Here’s what you need to know about which retail and grocery stores in California will be open and closed on Easter in 2025.

What is open/closed on Good Friday?

This year, Good Friday falls on April 3 this year during Holy Week, which started with Palm Sunday on March 29, 2026 and ends with Easter Sunday. This year’s Passover week (April 1-9) overlaps with Holy Week.

The holiday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, which according to Christian belief, is seen as a sacrifice that atones for the sins of humanity. While the day is a somber one, it is also considered “good” because it leads to the hope and joy of Easter Sunday where the resurrection of Jesus is celebrated, signifying victory over death.

Good Friday is not a federal holiday in the United States. While it is recognized as a public holiday in some states, that is not the case for California.

Most major retailers and restaurants are expected to be open for business as usual on Good Friday. Additionally, U.S. Postal Service facilities will operate normally, and mail will be delivered as usual, as will UPS and FedEx services.

The Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange will be closed on Good Friday, but most banks will be open for regular business hours. Many schools are off for Good Friday and the Easter weekend break.
