ROUNDUP: Zak, Hochanadel power Johnstown in opening softball victory

SUNBURY ― Jenna Hochanadel and Addy Zak each had three hits while Lucia Kuhn tossed a three-hitter, leading visiting Johnstown to a season-opening 6-2 win against Big Walnut on March 25.

Zak and Hochanadel each went 3-for-3 with a double and two singles, with Zak accounting for two RBIs and Hochanadel one. Kuhn struck out six and didn’t walk a batter.

Riley Stefanick added two singles with an RBI; Violet Wentzel also had two hits. Kuhn knocked in a run for the Johnnies.

Green Wave rolls

Newark Catholic downed Westland 14-0 in five innings on March 25, with Brooklyn Kurtz smashing a triple, double and single for five RBIs, and Avery Sullivan chasing home three more runs with three singles.

Veronica Bailey not only allowed just one hit over four innings with seven strikeouts, but also clubbed a double and two singles with three RBIs for the Green Wave (1-1).

Joanna Bailey doubled and singled with two RBIs. Marissa Richards had a double and single. Joanna Snider tripled. Jahni Whitney contributed a single and an RBI.

Watkins prevails

Ava Bailey rapped a two-run single and Alli Langwasser followed with an RBI groundout for what proved to be the winning run in the top of the eighth inning, as visiting Watkins Memorial outlasted Olentangy Berlin 8-7 on March 25.

Bryna Davis circled the bases for a two-run, inside-the-park homer for the Warriors (2-0). Bailey had two hits, as did Sierra Fuchs, who added an RBI. Emma Jellison chipped in with a single and an RBI.

Granville blanked

Avery Reynolds stymied visiting Granville on a three-hitter with 14 strikeouts and three walks as Dublin Scioto shut out the Blue Aces 6-0 on March 25.

Avary King doubled and singled for Granville (2-1).

Newark beaten

Lexi Shanaberg slugged two solo homers for Newark in a 20-2, five-inning loss at Gahanna on March 25.

The Lions exploded for 14 runs in the fourth inning against the Wildcats (1-2).

Heath defeated

Host Olentangy erupted for 14 runs in the first inning and went on to a 24-4, five-inning win against Heath on March 25.

Lexi Purington went 3-for-3 with three singles and two RBIs for the Bulldogs (0-2). Kate Zarins added a double and a single with an RBI.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

North tops Wildcats

Host Pickerington North won the final two sets in a 25-17, 21-25, 25-17, 25-20 victory against Newark on March 25.

Miles Drake had eight kills, nine digs and four aces for the Wildcats (2-3), while Koby Watson had nine kills, 18 digs and six aces. Zalyn Hanzey had 27 digs, nine kills and four aces. Dominique Williamson added nine kills and 10 digs.
