The Chicago Bears have been a busy team during free agency, but they legitimately wasted zero time on their biggest signing this offseason. On the first day of free agency, the Bears made a splash in signing safety Coby Bryant to a 3-year, $40 million deal, focusing on a position that they desperately needed to fill this offseason.
In total, the Bears have lost three safeties this offseason, including both starters from last season in Jaquan Brisker and Kevin Byard, both who departed for teams in the AFC. Chicago signed Bryant away from the Seattle Seahawks, where he won a Super Bowl championship last year, and he’s seen plenty of success over the last two seasons after moving from corner to safety prior to the 2024 season.
During a recent appearance on the “Up & Adams Show,” Bryant provided insight to how his free agency played out with Chicago, revealing that the organization wasted no time in giving him a call.
“Just the sense of being wanted,” Bryant said when asked about what first intrigued him the most. “They called me at 7 a.m., and I’m in Arizona so they called me pretty early, and I had just woken up, that struck it right there, honestly. Them pursuing to get me over there, it wasn’t easy, being in Seattle for four years but ultimately I’m blessed and that’s what led me to Chicago. I was just waking up (when they called), them telling me how much they wanted me there, what I could bring to the team, and I had already seen what they were building, it’s definitely special and I’m excited to be part of it.”
Landing Bryant has still been the biggest addition the Bears have made this offseason, and while it wasn’t the free agency frenzy that many were expecting, it was clear that Chicago identified Bryant early on. He’ll have a big role on the field with defensive coordinator Dennis Allen and a leadership role inside the locker room, a trait that may be the most valuable thing he brings, especially coming off of a Super Bowl championship.
