More than 350 flights to and from Detroit Metro Airport are delayed, and more than 70 are canceled on Tuesday.
Flight-tracking website FlightAware reported 33 flights departing from Detroit Metro were canceled and 176 were delayed. It said 40 flights scheduled to arrive at the airport were canceled, and another 177 were delayed.
Officials with the Wayne County Airport Authority, which operates Detroit Metro, said the decision to delay or cancel flights is made by individual airlines and is based on a variety of factors, including weather.
Delta Air Lines, the largest carrier at Detroit Metro, reported that eight of its flights from and to the airport were cancelled and another 54 were delayed by Tuesday evening.
Airline officials on Tuesday said it continues to recover after widespread inclement weather across eastern North America.
“With delays from Monday impacting flight crew availability for required rest, additional cancellations are occurring on Tuesday,” the company said in a statement. “While cancellations are always a last resort after all options are exhausted, customers are automatically rebooked to the next best available flight.”
It also said its customers are encouraged to use the Delta app or delta.com for the latest information on their flight and to make changes to bookings if needed. Customers may get a refund if a flight is canceled and they choose not to travel.
The canceled and delayed flights come after extreme weather and storms walloped the Midwest and the South.
They also come as a partial government shutdown has forced 50,000 airport security officers to work without pay stretches into nearly a month.
The Trump administration said more than 10% of Transportation Security Administration airport security officers did not show up for work on Sunday due to the shutdown.
