PONTE VEDRA BEACH — A man who shot and killed two people less than a mile from the main parking area for The Players Championship has been captured near the Florida-Georgia border after being tracked onto the TPC Sawgrass property where the tournament is being played.
The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office said the incident occurred at a Walgreens parking lot about 1,000 feet east of the PGA Tour Global Home late on March 13. They said the suspect, listed as Christian Joseph Barrios, 32, at one point was on the Tour property and encountered employees at the tournament site while fleeing.
Barrios was captured early March 14 in Nassau County, near the Florida-Georgia border.
The incident has delayed the opening of the gates for the third round of The Players. Gates were scheduled to open at 7:30 a.m., and now will open at 9 a.m.
Tee times for the third round were not delayed.
The Sherriff’s office said the suspect has an extensive criminal history with more than 20 arrests. Police described the shooting as domestic in nature, and both victims were known to the suspect.
