Who's running for Ventura County offices this June? Here's the lineup

Local voters in the June 2 primary will be asked to choose from more than a dozen candidates vying to fill key Ventura County offices.

Those seats run the gamut, from superintendent of schools to tax collector. Most of the races will be competitive, though a couple have just a single candidate.

The Ventura County Elections Division recently released names of those who qualified in the eight county races, as officials gear up for the primary. Some seats could be decided in June, instead of going to a runoff in the fall.

In a county-level race, a candidate who gets more than 50% of the votes in the primary wins the seat outright. If no candidate earns more than half of the votes, the top two finishers advance to the general election in November.

Local voters also will be asked to elect California’s governor, other state-level posts and pick winners in Congressional and state Assembly districts. For now, the candidate list for federal and state offices has yet to be finalized. The official lineup will be released by the Secretary of State later this month, officials said.

Here are the candidates who qualified for county posts. Their names are listed in the order they’re expected to appear on the ballot:

County Superintendent of Schools

County Supervisor

2nd District

4th District

County Assessor

Auditor-Controller

Clerk and Recorder

Treasurer-Tax Collector

Superior Court Judge, Office No. 15

Key dates for California’s primary

Early voting is set to begin on May 4, the same day election officials plan to start mailing ballots to registered voters.

The deadline to register to vote online is May 18, but those eligible can register in person up to and including on Election Day in California. Called conditional voter registration or same-day registration, eligible voters fill out a provisional ballot and a registration form at the same time.

Under the state’s Voters Choice Act, the county has extended in-person voting days but reduced the number of voting locations. Instead of hundreds of polling places, a smaller number of vote centers open for additional days.

The initial vote center locations will open on May 23.
