Early morning crash on I-55 kills two people in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD – Two people were killed in a two-car crash in Springfield on March 9.

The crash happened on I-55 southbound at milepost 87.5 near East Lake Shore Drive around 1 a.m., according to Illinois State Police.

Police said the crash involved a wrong way driver traveling northbound in the southbound lanes.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene while a passenger of one of the vehicles was taken to the hospital with injuries. Police did not say how severe the injuries were to the passenger or what their condition was.

The names and ages of the drivers have not been released as of Monday morning.

Police have not said why one of the vehicles was driving on the wrong side of the road.

I-55 southbound was closed for multiple hours and reopened a little after 6 a.m. Monday.
