Ellen & Michael’s Osteria & Market Restaurant will make its much-anticipated debut and open for business Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 68 W. Market St.
Ellen and Michael Lanahan, who have owned and operated The Cellar since July 2015 at 21 W. Market St., are launching Ellen & Michael’s Osteria & Market at the site that formerly housed Sorge’s Restaurant since 1951.

Ellan & Michael’s will be open from 4:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and from 4:30-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Lunch hours will be announced at a later date. Reservations are “strongly encouraged” and can be made on the website.
The Lanahans are excited to begin a new chapter with Ellen & Michael’s, an Italian restaurant concept that will honor Michael’s rich heritage and love of family-style meals.
“It will be a family style Italian restaurant, and everything will be made from scratch,” Ellen Lanahan previously told The Leader when the couple shared plans to open the restaurant. “It will be a new restaurant, with new concepts, different that the previous owner. The Cellar will stay open. The homemade style Italian restaurant will be an additional eatery.”
The restaurant is not yet offering online orders but advised diners to “stay tuned.”
Jen Miller, Corning City Planning and Economic Director, said the new restaurant will be an asset to the city and the entire community.
“It’s great to see another addition to Market Street,” Miller said. “It’s exciting to see something like this moving into that location.”
According to Ellen & Michael’s website, the restaurant is based on a belief “in the simple joy of gathering around a table filled with handmade pasta, locally-sourced ingredients, and recipes passed down through generations. Our kitchen is an extension of our home, where every dish is crafted with love and served with the warmth of true Italian hospitality.”
The Lanahans will rent the building, which is owned by Barry Nicholson.
Sorge’s opened on Market Street in June 1951 and was operated by Renato and Loretta Sorge, along with Renato’s brother, Remo. That tradition came to an end Dec. 31, 2024, when Sorge’s closed its doors for good.
