New York’s winter snowfall totals continue to climb, with several cities nearing — or surpassing — their seasonal averages.
Here’s where things stand across the state.
Rochester, New York, has officially surpassed the 100-inch mark for the 2025–26 winter season, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo. As of mid-February, 100.7 inches of snow have been recorded at Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport, where official measurements are taken. Rochester’s average seasonal snowfall is about 100 inches. The last time the city exceeded that mark was during the winter of 2017–18, when 120.5 inches were recorded.
For perspective:
Syracuse — typically New York’s snow leader — has recorded 127.5 inches so far this season. That’s just shy of its average annual snowfall of about 128 inches, and currently the highest total among the state’s major cities. Syracuse also leads the annual “Golden Snowball” contest, an informal competition among upstate cities for the season’s highest snowfall. Its snowiest winter on record was 1992–93, when 207.9 inches fell.

Measurable snow typically falls across upstate New York through March, and snow has been recorded as late as May — though that’s uncommon. With weeks of winter still ahead, seasonal totals across the state are likely to rise.
