It's fish fry season. Churches ready to serve Lenten meals around Stark County

The Lenten season begins soon.

That also means it will be fish fry season.

Ash Wednesday, which is Feb. 18 this year, marks the start of Lent, a 40-day period of prayer, fasting and penitence leading up to Easter.

It’s also a period when many Christians abstain from eating meat on Fridays and the reason why fish fries are so popular at this time of year.

Where to find a fish fry during Lent in Stark County

Here’s what some area churches are offering when it comes to traditional fish fry and Lenten meals:

Divine Mercy parish, St. Mary campus, 640 First St. NE, Massillon, 330-833-6898. Dine-in or drive-thru Lenten fish fry 5 to 7:30 p.m. Fridays from Feb. 20 through March 27. Dinner consists of two pieces of hand-battered fried fish, baked potato or macaroni and cheese, green beans, coleslaw, applesauce, dinner roll and dessert for $20. Water, lemonade and coffee provided. Beer and soda are available for purchase when dining in.

East Canton Church of God, 201 E. Nassau St., East Canton, 330-488-0366. Carryout or dine in from 4:30 to 7 p.m. March 27. Meal is a choice of three-piece battered fish or three-piece chicken tenders, fresh-cut fries or baked potato, applesauce or coleslaw, roll and dessert, $13. Tickets must be purchased in advance at www.eastcantonchurch.org.

Holy Family Parish, St. Clement Church, 216 E. Wooster St., Navarre. 330-879-5900. Lenten meals 4 to 6:30 p.m. Fridays from Feb. 20 to March 27. Fish dinner or fish sandwich, served with choice of sides — fries, macaroni and cheese, and coleslaw. Cash and card payments are accepted. Bingo to follow. Call the parish office for any questions. No phone orders.

Little Flower Catholic Parish, 2040 Diamond St. NE, Plain Township, 330-494-2759. Men’s Club Fish Fry, 4 to 6:30 p.m. Fridays from Feb. 20 through March 27. No fish fry on Good Friday. Dine-in or carryout (no phone orders). Choice of dinners is variety of two-piece fried or baked cod or fantail shrimp dinners, with two sides, $13-$15. One piece and children’s options available. Sides are applesauce, french fries, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw and green beans. Coffee and soft drinks included with dine-in orders only. Desserts sold separately. Credit cards accepted ($1 service fee).

Queen of Heaven Church, 1800 Steese Road, Green. 330-896-2345. Carryout or dine-in Lenten dinners 4:30 to 7 p.m. Fridays from Feb. 20 through March 27 in the Parish Life Center. Fried cod, $13; baked cod, $15; fish tacos, $13; shrimp, $15; combo shrimp/cod baked or fried, $17; pierogies, two slices of pizza, or macaroni and cheese, $11. All dinners are served with a glass of water, bread and butter, coffee or tea and include two hot sides selected from green beans, french fries, buttered red-skin potatoes, mixed vegetables, hot rice, macaroni and cheese, or pierogies; and one cold side (applesauce or coleslaw). Only with dinners, extra sides, $3 each; fried fish, $3 each; baked fish, $7 each; shrimp, $1 each; slice pizza, $3 each, fish taco, $3. Soft drinks and desserts available for purchase. Questions? Menu consists of halushki (cabbage, noodles and onions), $3; pierogies, $1 each or $12 a dozen (potato and cheese, sauerkraut or jalapeno; extra toppings available for $1; apple fritters, $2 each; drinks (soft drinks, coffee, bottled water), $1. St. Francis Xavier Church, 125 S. Carrollton St., Malvern, 330-868-4498.Dine-in or carryout available from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 13, 20 and 27 and March 6, 13, 20 and 27. Dinners are in Good Shepherd Hall. Fried or baked fish dinners are $15 for adults and $7 for children; spaghetti dinners are $10 for adults and $7 for children; children 5 or younger eat for free. Macaroni and cheese entrée for children is $7. Side-dish choices are french fries, macaroni and cheese or spaghetti and homemade coleslaw or applesauce. All dinners include a roll with butter, coffee or lemonade and dessert. Cash or credit.  

St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 400 W. High St., Minerva, 330-868-4498. Fish or rigatoni dinners 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Fridays from Feb. 20 through March 27. Fish dinner prices are adults, $12; children ages 6-12, $6; children younger than 6, free. Rigatoni dinner prices are adults, $8; children ages 6-12, $5; children younger than 6, free. Each meal is served with a choice of french fries or a baked potato, along with coleslaw, bread, dessert, and beverage. Carryout meals are available. Call 330-868-4610 to place your order.

St. George Romanian Byzantine Catholic Cathedral, 1123 44th St. NE, Canton, 330-492-8413. Carryout or dine-in fish fry 4:30 to 7 p.m. Fridays from Feb. 20 to March 27. For carryout, call 330-492-8413. The dinner choices are beer-battered fish (two pieces), $17.50; baked fish (one piece), $17.50; or seafood platter (four shrimp, four scallops, one beer-battered fish), $18. Each dinner comes with choice of two sides: fresh-cut french fries, herbed rice, mamaliga (cornmeal mush) with cheese, coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, green beans, or applesauce. Homemade bread comes with all dinners. A slice of pie is $3. Domestic and European beverages available, along with soft drinks and water. Coffee is free. Cash and credit cards are accepted. St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, 4667 Applegrove St. NW, Jackson Township, 330-494-2712. Lenten fish dinners 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 20, 27, March 6, 13, 20, 27 and April 3 in the Event Center Hall. Adult dinner options are baked cod or beer-battered cod or eight breaded shrimp. Dinners include choice of potato or Serbian rice pilaf, plus green beans almondine, and choice of Serbian-style coleslaw or applesauce, roll and butter. Children’s dinners include choice of one piece of beer-battered cod or four breaded shrimp, choice of one side, and roll and butter. All items available a la carte. St. Isidore Parish (formerly Sacred Heart of Mary & St. Louis parishes), 330-875-1658. Sacred Heart of Mary Hall, 8900 Columbus Road NE, Nimishillen Township. Lenten meals 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Fridays. Menu selections for main entrée are one-, two- or three-piece beer-batter fried or baked fish (cod), plus three sides, dessert and beverage. Sides are french fries, macaroni and cheese, green beans, fried rice, haluski (fried cabbage and noodles), applesauce, cole slaw. Grilled cheese sandwiches and soup selections are available. Kids meals available for ages 4-12, $8. Cost is $13 for one-piece meal, $15 for two-piece meal; $17 for three-piece meal. Stations of the Cross at Sacred Heart of Mary Church at 7 p.m.

St. Joan of Arc, 4940 Tuscarawas St. W, Canton, 330-477-6796. Carryout or dine-in Lenten dinners 5 to 7:30 p.m. Fridays from Feb. 20 through March 27. Dinners (including two sides) are one-, two- or three-piece fried cod at $10, $13 and $16; baked cod, $20; fried shrimp, $13; two Cajun fish tacos or two Cajun shrimp tacos, $14; six pierogies, $10; macaroni and cheese, $11. St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 755 S. Cleveland Ave., Mogadore, 330-628-4441. Friday fish fry dates are Feb. 20 through April 3. Walk in to dine in from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Battered fried cod dinner is three pieces served with wedge fries, hot sauce rice, tangy vinegar coleslaw and tartar sauce, $16. Baked cod dinner is two cod filets served with green beans, hot sauce rice, tangy vinegar coleslaw and tartar sauce, $16. Pierogi dinner is six homemade pierogi and onions, green beans, applesauce and sour cream, $14. Extras are $5: pierogi and desserts weekly; halushki on March 6 and 27.
