What was that colorful hat Jordan Stolz wore after winning Olympic gold?

RHO, Italy − Jordan Stolz isn’t just a good sport.

He’s a big fan of speed skating, of course, and loves the history, rivalries and traditions that come with it. So maybe we’ll get a chance to ask more about that hat.

Stolz had just set the Olympic record in the 1,000 meters on Feb. 11 in Italy when he did a victory lap to thank his fans and supporters. He gathered a bouquet of flowers, meant as a gesture of congratulations.

But what about that colorful flower cap?

Stolz has been in it before – two years ago when he won the prestigious World AllRound title. And he put it on and wore it briefly during his victory lap as well.

“They must throw it out for the Olympic champion,” Jordan’s father, Dirk Stolz, said.

“I never remember a woman wearing it,” Jordan’s mother, Jane Stolz, said.

They believe the hat is constructed by a Dutch fan who presents it only to champions. The hat is meant to be returned, to be worn by the next champion.

“Wear it once, get some pictures of it and that’s it,” Jane said.

Maybe the hat will return Feb. 14 if Stolz wins the 500.
