Woman faces DUI charges in Peoria crash that paralyzed man, hurt kids

PEORIA — A woman is facing five counts of aggravated DUI following a vehicle collision that left a man paralyzed and three children injured in Peoria last weekend.

Ganala Johnson, 28, is facing five charges in Peoria County Court after she allegedly crashed into another vehicle while driving under the influence, injuring two adults and three children.

Johnson was arrested Friday night in Central Peoria after police responded to a crash between an SUV and a truck at the intersection of University Street and McClure Avenue.

Police interviewed Johnson after the crash and observed slurred speech and the smell of alcohol on her breath. She was taken to a hospital, where she later admitted to drinking alcohol, according to the State’s Attorney’s Office.

Johnson was driving an SUV with another adult and three children inside of it. Two children were treated for a concussion and one suffered a broken nose; the adult passenger suffered a broken hip.

The driver of the other vehicle has been left paralyzed from the neck down.

Surveillance footage captured by a nearby gas station observed the SUV crashing into the truck as pulled out of the gas station. A witness also told police they observed the SUV traveling at 80 mph.

Johnson was released from custody on Tuesday after a judge ruled at her detention hearing that she could not be held in jail because of her lack of previous criminal history. She was released under conditions that she not consume alcohol or any other intoxicating substances.
