Monday, February 2
Streetsboro 42, Norton 41
Ava Bodovetz scored all six of her points in the fourth quarter, including the go-ahead basket with 1:12 remaining on an assist from Sara Koyan. The senior post later added a pair of clutch free throws for the Rockets.
“She’s a great player for us,” Streetsboro coach Carl Singer said. “She does a lot of great things. I thought she did a great job on the boards tonight, great job on defense. She just couldn’t quite get it going on offense, but for her to come through like that at the end, it’s big for us and definitely big for her.”
Fellow senior Carlee Bedford added a team-high 12 points as the Rockets (13-5, 10-1 Metro Athletic Conference) avenged a January loss to the Panthers. The two teams are now in a virtual tie atop the MAC. Norton (15-3, 11-1) technically holds a half-game lead but both teams have just one MAC loss.
“We came in saying this is still our title to defend, this is still our league to win, but we knew it was going to be a battle,” Singer said. “It is pretty much every time with them. They’re a great team, they play hard. For us, it’s been an issue of consistency throughout the season, so we’re hoping after tonight, I think we played a lot of good basketball consistently, we didn’t have a lot of big runs [or] big mistakes, and we just hope that continues going forward.”
Norton has just two league games left — home against Coventry (Feb. 4) and on the road against Field (Feb. 6). Streetsboro’s clash against Norton marked the first of four straight road games to round out MAC play. The Rockets next go to Cloverleaf (Feb. 4), followed by trips to Coventry (Feb. 7) and Field (Feb. 9).
