The week of Jan. 18-24 was full of exciting wrestling matches, basketball games and swimming meets featuring male high school athletes from the Des Moines metro area.
In wrestling, the prestigious Ed Winger Invitational took place in Urbandale on Jan. 24. Basketball featuring Des Moines area teams saw Class 5A No. 2 Waukee Northwest edge Millard North (Neb.) and take down Johnston, whileDes Moines Lincoln rolled past Des Moines North.
There were also competitive swimming meets featuring teams from the metro area.
Several individual male high school athletes from the metro area stood out during the week.
Here are the Des Moines Register’s male Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of Jan. 18-24. DesMoinesRegister.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.
Jaxon Miller, Carlisle
Miller placed first at 175 pounds during the Ed Winger Invitational wrestling tournament on Jan. 24 at Urbandale.
Miller, ranked No. 2 at 175 in 3A by IAwrestle.com, went 4-0 during the tournament. He defeated No. 1 Maximus Dhabolt of Ankeny Centennial in the finals by a 4-2 decision.
Nolan Fellers, Bondurant-Farrar
Fellers, ranked No. 1 at 157 in 3A by IAwrestle.com, cruised to an individual championship at the Ed Winger Invitational.
Fellers was 4-0 during the tournament. He earned three victories by technical fall before defeating Prairie City-Monroe’s Tucker Wheeler, the No. 3 wrestler at 165 in 2A, by a 12-5 decision in the finals.
Lionel Parks, Des Moines Lincoln
Parks had a strong all-around showing for the Des Moines Lincoln basketball team during an 81-45 victory over Des Moines North on Jan. 20.
He made 8 of 10 field goals and he finished with 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals to lead a balanced Railsplitter effort.
Colin Rice, Waukee Northwest
Rice was fantastic for the Class 4A No. 2 Waukee Northwest basketball team during a 70-68 victory over Millard North (Neb.) in the MLK Classic on Jan. 20.
He went for 33 points after making 11 of 19 field goals, including four 3-pointers, and 7 of 8 free throws. He also pulled down nine rebounds.
Trey Bryte, ADM
Bryte had a fantastic all-around game for the 3A No. 4 Adel-Desoto-Minburn basketball team during a 62-45 victory at Winterset on Jan. 22.
He nearly produced a triple-double after recording 19 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists. He also had five steals and three blocks for the Tigers.
