Terry Turner, chief operating officer for Joe’s Crab Shack, confirmed to the Florida Times-Union on Jan. 13 that it will be transformed into Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Joe’s and Bubba Gump are two of more than 70 brands under the Landry’s umbrella.

USA TODAY notes that another Florida location in Fort Myers closed in late May after being open for two decades.

Why did so many Joe’s Crab Shacks close?

USA TODAY reported that Landry’s Inc. previously owned Joe’s Crab Shack from 1994 to 2006. Landry’s bought Joe’s Crab Shack again in 2017 when the then-owners, Ignite Restaurant Group Inc., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

When they filed for bankruptcy in 2017, more than 40 locations across the U.S. closed and have been closing in dwindling numbers since. It has been reported that underperforming sales, high debt, and failed attempts to move to a more upscale concept resulted in Joe’s Crab Shack shuttering many locations.
